The Saint Athanasius Basketball Program was created in 1936 and we proudly continue its prestigious tradition. The Basketball Program offers children from ages three to fourteen the opportunity to compete during the fall and winter season.
Our Intramural Program is our in-house league. In this program, our athletes work with and compete against each other. Each athlete is given a uniform shirt and a pair of shorts.
- The Mini division allows three and four year olds to begin their basketball journey, by introducing them to the basic skills. These athletes are exposed to key fundamentals of basketball as well as what it means to be part of a team and work hard as an athlete.
- Our 5 and 6 year olds make up the Rookie Division. The division meets weekly on Saturday mornings from 9:30-11:00. These athletes continue to build on key fundamental skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting and are exposed to offense and defense.
- The College Division is made up of seven, eight and nine year olds on Saturdays. These players are broken up into six different teams that play competitively throughout the winter. Time is dedicated to practice for the first 30 minutes of each session followed by a competitive game. Athletes are placed on different squads based on their experience level to ensure the best experience for each child. At the conclusion of the season, there will be a playoff tournament held. Parents will receive a schedule with a game slated for 11:00PM, 12:30PM or 2:00PM.
- The Pro Division is for our athletes ages 10-13. This division meets on Friday nights. This division is made up of six teams. Following practice, games will start at 7:00PM. At the conclusion of the season, there will be a playoff tournament held. Parents will receive a schedule with a game slated for 7:00PM, 8:00PM or 9:00PM.
Our travel program allows our St. Athanasius athletes to compete against players from other parishes in Brooklyn and Queens. St. Athanasius basketball competes in the CYO basketball league. In order to play for the St. Athanasius travel team, athletes need to be a parish resident or member. Anyone interested in playing in our travel league must first register with CYO to obtain a membership number from cyodob.org. Tryouts will be held in September and the season starts the first week in November. The travel program is open to players born in 2008- 2014.
